چکیده
An experimental study of the production of up-going charged particles in inelastic interactions of down-going underground muons is reported, using data obtained from the MACRO detector at the Gran Sasso Laboratory. In a sample of 12.2×106 single muons, corresponding to a detector livetime of 1.55 y, 243 events are observed having an up-going particle associated with a down-going muon. These events are analysed to determine the range and emission angle distributions of the up-going particle, corrected for detection and reconstruction efficiency. Measurements of the muon neutrino flux by underground detectors are often based on the observation of through-going and stopping muons produced in νμ interactions in the rock below the detector. Up-going particles produced by an undetected down-going muon are a potential background source in these measurements. The implications of this background for neutrino studies using MACRO

Current underground detectors can search for multiple muons from multi-W(Z) production initiated by ultrahigh energy neutrinos from active galactic nuclei. O(µb) cross sections give rise to downward going muon bundles whose features differ from those of atmospheric muon bundles.

MACRO experiment operated in the Gran Sasso underground laboratory. Neutrino events collected by this detector are used in order to study the atmospheric neutrino flux. Different measurements in different energy samples are in full agreement and show evidence of neutrino oscillation phenomenon with maximal mixing and ∆m 2 ∼ 0.0025 eV 2. Also the search for neutrino astrophysical sources is repo...

A high energy primary cosmic ray interacts in the upper atmosphere producing a large number of pions and kaons, which decay yielding muons and muon neutrinos; the muons decay generating muon and electron neutrinos. These neutrinos are produced in a spherical shell at 10 − 20 km above ground and travel towards the Earth. The νμ can be detected by an underground experiment as muons, after their c...

The first optical modules of the Baikal high energy neutrino telescope have recently been deployed. Commissioning of the AMANDA, DUMAND and NESTOR detectors will follow soon. Before discussing the detectors we review the arguments that pinpoint 0.1 km as the natural scale of a neutrino telescope. Though present detectors do not quite reach this goal, their techniques, if successful, can be expl...

Abstract. More than 35 million high-energy muons collected with the MACRO detector at the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory have been used to search for flux variations of different nature. Two kinds of studies were carried out: a search for the occurrence of clusters of events and a search for periodic variations. Different analysis methods, including the Scan Statistics test and the Lomb-Scar...
